Ten-year-old spurs book donation effort
(The Times Union, 7/4/2007)
American Grown 4H Club and the Arlington Explorers Homeschool Support Group delivered 274 books and 77 puzzles and games June 20 2007 to the Wolfson Children's Hospital library. The homeschooled children, ages 5-15, purchased the books by collecting more than $1200 in pledges for a group "walk-a-thon" held May 18.
Ten-year-old Savannah Hughes of East Arlington, the 4H Clubs' community service project coordinator and an Arlington Explorers member, wanted to fill a need for more books and puzzles to entertain children as they wait for medical appointments, tests and surgeries at Wolfson.
Savannah's peers were enthusiastic about her fundraising idea and helped make the event a reality. Cherish Farris of the Northside, 10, amassed more than $400 in pledges.
The children are encouraged to look beyond their social circles and neighborhoods in order to impact those in need. Homeschooling allows the parents the flexibility to teach children how they can impact their world and 4-H provides a vehicle for that instruction. It's a win-win situation for the families and the community.
This is the second joint service project Savannah has led to benefit the Wolfson Children's Hospital. When it came to the groups' attention in late 2006 that children entering the Wolfson emergency room do not receive pillows, the group crafted 65 no-sew fleece pillows to give to pediatric patients for Christmas.
Our Mission Statement:
To befriend, equip, and empower homeschooling families through fellowship, information sharing and learning opportunities
The Arlington Explorers is an eclectic homeschool support group serving Arlington and surrounding areas. We meet for weekly park dates, monthly field trips, small interest-based groups, and service projects. Additionally, we offer opportunities to order from Scholastic Book Club and host an end of the year party to celebrate a year's hard work. Although the majority of our families in AE are Christian, affiliation with a specific church or denomination is not required. Our members attend a wide variety of churches and use an equally wide variety of curriculums.
